With India already qualified and South Africa likely to be in the knockouts, still Pakistan, Ireland and West Indies are in contention for the two remaining spots.
With Pakistan registering a crucial win in Saturday's match against South Africa they are likely to steal a spot in quarters, but nothing is written on the wall, just yet, as they can still be thrown out. However, the chances are less likely. Zimbabwe and UAE have no chance of progressing
The scenarios are as follows
For Pakistan to qualify
Games remaining: 1 (v Ireland)- They need just a win against Ireland in the final league match
If they lose
- West Indies need to lose against UAE
- Even if West Indies win, the Net Run Rate (NRR) will come into play.
For West Indies to qualify
Games remaining: 1 (v United Arab Emirates)- A win is a must.
- If Pakistan could beat Ireland later in the competition, they already have a superior NRR to Ireland and they need it big to push their NRR above Pakistan.
Likely to finish fourth.
For Ireland to qualify
Games remaining 2 (v India; v Pakistan)
- Need to win at least one of their two matches
If they lose both,
- UAE must beat West Indies
Likely to be eliminated; could finish 5th in the pool
Prediction
- The winner of Pakistan v Ireland match will earn a quarterfinal berth for sure (with 8 points) as West Indies can get only a maximum of six points.
- If Ireland can win both their matches, and West Indies win big against UAE, there is a slender possibility of Pakistan to be eliminated.
- South Africa is unlikely to go down against UAE nor be dropping down on NRR, lower than the teams below them.
