One of the hosts New Zealand are already through to the quarter-finals, Sri Lanka have brighter chance to qualify. The other hosts Australia are in contention for a place in the knockouts. With Bangladesh and England also fighting tough, the Pool A is yet to be settled and we discuss the possible scenarios for each team to qualify.

Current team standings (Pool A)

For Sri Lanka to qualify

Games remaining: 2 (vs Australia and Scotland)
  • At least a win in the next two games.(Highly possible)
If they lose both,
  • Will be on par with England in points (if England wins the next two games) and the one with better NRR will qualify

For Australia to qualify

Games remaining; 2 (v Sri Lanka; v Scotland)
  • Al least a win in the remaining two games (Highly possible).
If they lose both,
  • They will be eliminated or will be on par with Bangladesh in points. (If Bangladesh also loses the next two games)

For Bangladesh to qualify

Games remaining: 2 (v England; v New Zealand)
  • At least a win in the two remaining matches.(Not impossible)
If they lose both
  • They will be eliminated or will be on par with Australia in points. (If Australia also loses the next two games)
  • England should lose the other game against Afghanistan.

For England to qualify

Games remaining: 2 (v Bangladesh; v Afghanistan)
  • They must win the next two games and Bangladesh or Australia have to lose both their two games.
  • If Australia & Bangladesh win one match, then England could still make it with a better NRR than Sri Lanka, if the Asians lose their next two (Unlikely)

For Afghanistan to qualify

Games remaining: 2 (vs New Zealand and England)
  • Two must win matches, England and either one among Australia and Bangladesh should lose their next two games.

Predictions

  • New Zealand are unlikely to lose their next two and will remain on the top of the table.
  • If Australia can dispatch Sri Lanka in their next fixture then they will most probably finish at No.2
  • If Sri Lanka loses the next game against Australia, they will finish at No.3 or else they will occupy the No.2 since the chances of a loss against Scotland are very less.
  • The game between Bangladesh vs England will be the key, and if Bangladesh wins then they will be qualified at No.4 or England will finish at 4 if Bangladesh lose against New Zealand.
