Sri Lankan navy has arrested as many as 54 Indian fishermen for allegedly poaching in the Lankan coast border of Kankesanturai and Talaimannar in the north.
Sri Lankan Naval spokesman Commander Indika Silva said that 21 fishermen were arrested and five boats were seized at Kankesanturai while the rest of them are were arrested at Talaimannaron Saturday night and their five boats also were seized.
Notably Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Sri Lanka recently becoming the first Indian PM to visit the neighbour since 1987. As a result, 86 Indian fisherman were released by Sri Lanka government as a goodwill gesture.
The arrests came ahead of the announcement of dates for direct talks between the fisher communities of two nations.
