Australia vs India 2014/15 - 2nd Test: Steven Smith appointed vice-captain

Steven Smith
Steven Smith will lead Australia in Brisbane with regular skipper Michael Clarke out with a hamstring pull, confirmed Cricket Australia.

"As a captain first and foremost I'll try to lead from the front with my performance on the field, and with regards to tactics I think we've been pretty good this year," Smith said on accepting the responsibility.

"Pup's been amazing with what he's done and the group we've got at the moment going forward. I don't think there's any real need for a big change there," he added.

The 25 year-old was touted to be the future captain after Clarke, but is never a front runner for the role of leadership at this very moment, considering his lack of experience as an international skipper.

Selectors plan ahead

Notably, it was Brad Haddin who took charge once Clarke left the field on the final day of the Adelaide Test. Australia made heavy inroads in the final session, disarming India, who were strongly on the winning track till then.

Apart from Clarke, only Shane Watson has lead Australia before (Delhi, 2013). It can be said that Clarke's fitness has forced the Australian selectors to fast track Smith to the top post, preferring the youngster over the 37-year-old Haddin.

"Brad Haddin would have done an excellent job as well, he did a great job captaining the side on the last day in Adelaide," national selector Mark Waugh told Fox Sports.

"But Brad's getting towards the end of his career, he's said he probably wants to go if his form's good enough to the Ashes next August, so taking all that into account, the fact Brad's probably not going to be there beyond that, common sense says it's a good time to blood someone a bit younger who's going to be around for the next 10 or so years," Waugh added.

Australia lead the four match series 1-0. The second Test is scheduled to start on Wednesday,
