Nathan Lyon spun Australia to victory in the final session of the Test |
Virat Kohli did everything he could. But sadly, it was not enough to carry India to the finish as the visitors fell short by 48 runs in the first Test in Adelaide.
Ending the afternoon session without a loss of a single wicket, India were firmly on the way to a famous win at 205/2. With 37 overs to go, India required 157 runs to go 1-0 up in the four match series.
Murali Vijay perished leg-before to the Man of the Match Nathan Lyon for 99, soon after his skipper Virat Kohli reached his second century of the match. When Ajinkya Rahane was wrongly given out at short leg, Australia clawed their way back into the game.
Rohit Sharma was never at ease on the day 5 pitch and it proved how well Vijay and Kohli were batting as they purposefully went after the run chase with a 185-run 3rd wicket partnership.
Wriddhiman Saha lost the plot trying to go after the bowling and Kohli had no option but to score all the runs himself. The Indian No.4 mistimed a pull to deep mid-wicket and the Aussies completed the formality of closing out the Indian innings fairly comfortably.
Lyon finished with 7/152, taking his match haul to 12/286. Notably, it was Brad Haddin who was in-charge of the proceedings as Michael Clarke limped off the field with a hamstring pull. Clarke himself informed that it will be hard for him to take any further part in the series in the post-match presentation ceremony.
The second Test begins in three days time, on the 17th of December at Brisbane.
