Martina Hingis and Sania Mirza with the Miami Open trophy |
The top-seeded Indo-Swiss pair of Sania Mirza and Martina Hingis defeated Ekaterina Makarova and Elena Vesnina of Russia 7-5, 6-1 to lift the Miami Open title, their second trophy in as many tournaments together.
The win marks the 25th career WTA doubles title for the Indian who is now just 145 points away from the World No.1 doubles ranking.
In an astonishing turnaround, the pair pocketed 8 straight games after being 2-5 down in the opening set.
"We just tried to keep telling each other to enjoy the struggle. Last week everything came very, very easily to us - we didn't lose more than four games in a set. Over here we were down, and we were panicking. It was like, 'Oh my God, we're not playing well.' We just weren't used to that," Sania said after the match.
Interestingly, the duo is yet to drop a set, stretching over two tournaments completing a dream start for the pair. Commenting on the win, Hingis credited Sania's father Imran Mirza for his useful words between the match and said they were focused on playing one point at a time.
"Today the coaching really turned it around - your dad came on court," Hingis spoke to Sania.
"The most important thing is that we never stopped believing we're a great team. They played a great set to get us to that position, 5-2 down. Then we just tried to stay in there and get our chances. We just built on every point, which is what we did well last week too," added Hingis after winning her 43rd doubles title.
