Matti Makkonen, regarded as the 'Father of SMS' for his contributions in launching text messages on mobiles devices passed away on Tuesday, aged 63. Nokia launched it in a big way in 1994 with the model Nokia 2010, using the texting technology to greater heights. Makkonen will downplay his contributions to the same, pointing to the fact that he did not invent it single-handedly.
"It's very sad. He was just going to retire and he should have had many years ahead," said Matilainen, managing director of Finnish telecoms group Finnet Association.
"We liked to talk about SMS and that kind of thing, 3G and so on. He liked to talk about this all time," he said.
While the service was made possible with the help of joint efforts, the Finnish-born was the one to develop the idea of communication with texting on mobile platforms.
