Just at the time when the limelight is on the Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation (TNSTC) for all the wrong things, the transport organization of the neighbour state has got worldwide recognition.
The Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) was awarded the 'International Public Transport' award for its innovative 'Staff Duty Rota System' at Milan, Italy, reports the Deccan Herald.
Among the corporation's 37,831 employees, 9% get daily leave, 17% get weekly off and another 10% are reserved for other exigencies. That means only 64% are on duty per day.
The report further says that the same is executed through a scientific method of duty allocation and leave management. Being one of the largest employed organizations in the transportation sector of our nation, the duty allocation is practised through seniority basis and counselling of employees.
The KSRTC received the honour from the UITP President Sir Peter Hendy, Commissioner for Transport for London and Chairman Morris Cheung.
Unending troubles for TNSTC
It is well known that the TNSTC only incurred heavy losses to the government, amounting to ₹6,150 Crores during the previous DMK regime. Just when the rice in ticket prices brought about some respite for the board, the earnings took a backseat last year since the arrest of Jayalalitha, the Hindu reports. Several buses were stoned and a few were cancelled to avoid problems, resulting in severe drop in fare collections.
Most recently, a suicide attempt of a driver in Maatuthavani, Madurai, for asking to get on board for another trip beyond his working hours created quite a lot of trouble. The driver also attempted to kill the depot manager who insisted to work overtime. A departmental inquiry is under progress over the incident and it required an assurance of appropriate action to avoid an employee strike.
The public can only hope that the transport standards and internal issues were sorted out quickly to provide peaceful, safe transport in the state.
