Rafale jet

As the Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi broke the suspense over the long-awaited deal to buy 36 Rafale jets from France, India will be looking forward to adding them to the Indian Air Force (IAF) within next two years, says Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar.

"Keeping in view the critical operational necessity of fighter aircrafts in India, I have spoken with the (French) President for buying 36 Rafale jets in fly-away condition as soon as possible," informed Narendra Modi after reaching an agreement on his visit to the European country.

Lauding the move to buy the jets, Parrikar feels the decision is a great one.

Earlier, India did plan to replace the ageing Soviet-era MiG-21 squadron with these jets but the long drawn out process stretching over 17 years made it difficult.

The original deal was estimated at USD 20 billion to deliver 126 such jets including 18 off-the-shelf Dassault ones. It has to be seen how much the new deal will cost the Indian government.
