Jose Mourinho's tactics failed against PSG |
The English leaders crashed out of the Champions League after a loss at the hands of French Champions Paris Saint-Germain. There are criticisms, teasing and mocking all over the internet on Chelsea after their woeful performance that no one expected from them and they deserve to be out. But how can a team like Chelsea with a very good squad full of quality lost a game even after the opponents were reduced to 10 men. Here are the reasons.
1. Lack of Motivation
The Blue players really looked as they do not have the desire to win the Champions League. Their attitude on the pitch is too sloppy and sometimes they looked aimless. There seemed no motivation in their play. Especially their most experienced players, they failed to impress the youngsters, their aimless attitude and carelessness affected the entire squad.
2. Tactics
Jose Mourinho – A tactical genius, one of the best in the world, what he did is simply went bad from worst. He employed his defending tactics as expected, but he failed to drill his players to execute. The biggest mistake he did was he has not changed his tactics even after the dismissal of Zlatan Ibrahimovic, the main man in front for the Parisians. He paid the ultimate prize for his failure as he was dismissed from the biggest stage of club competition.
Chelsea attackers actually did nothing in the 120 minutes except Eden Hazard. The Belgian failed to impress and inspire his fellow forwards since he is not at his usual best. The so-called Mourinho style striker Diego Costa was found angry and looking to fight with PSG defenders all the time. Apart from that he did not do any good.
The impressive Spanish creator Cesc Fabregas looked clueless as he constantly struggled to create anything useful before the determined PSG defense. The Brazilian combination of Oscar, Willian and Ramires were nowhere when their team needed them the most.
4. Defensive errors
The best solid defense unit of England failed to make their mark in the European stages as both the goals for PSG were from set pieces. Especially when your team plays defensively, the defense unit must be solid enough to hold on to the lead and the Chelsea defense failed terribly, were punished brutally by the Parisians.
The defensive errors were witnessed as clear water when the two CB’s of Chelsea, Gary Cahill, and John Terry pulled one another, left Thiago Silva unmarked which allowed the clinical Brazilian to head home and eventually alter the game in their favor.
Moreover the French champions showed very good character, even though their top player was sent off early. They deserved the win every bit. The entire Chelsea unit is to be blamed for the loss.
