The major concern of our nation at present is the major hike in the number of rape cases filed in the past 2 years. This has led to the worrisome situation where Indian male students are prohibited for internships abroad which has created a black mark to our nation. According to the latest statistics of the National Record of Crime Bureau (NRCB) in India, 93 women are raped every day. As per the statistics released by NRCB the total number of rape cases reported in India has gone up to 33707 in 2013 from 24923 in 2012. Of those, in 15,556 cases the women were aged between 18 and 30.
According to USA Today reporter Kevin Johnson "no other major category of crime – not murder, assault or robbery – has generated a more serious challenge of the credibility of national crime statistics" than rape.
With all these statistics and regular instances of rape cases being highlighted in media these days, you could even get a feeling of misinterpretation. Do you remember reading feature after feature from leading journals/media houses this frequently on rape a couple of years back.? Yes, the statistics say the number has increased and it is only fair to create awareness about the shameful act. But, can you deny that the media are only giving a wider eye to it since the infamous Delhi incident.
In countries like India major rape cases go unnoticed or go unreported because of the fear of being discarded by their own family or due to the fear of honour killings or due to extreme social stigma cast on women.
Furthermore in India where premature sex or adultery is illegal, the accused could escape punishment during prosecution of law when there is no sufficient evidence to provide in court. If the abused, victims of rape were not virgin at the time of rape (in unmarried cases), the accused has plenty of holes to escape punishment, claims sources. Such irony is the state of women in India.
In 2013, some statistics said that around 68,000 cases were registered in a period of three years but only 16,000 were convicted.
This proves that incidents occur very often, but they come to light only nowadays when compared to past due to media and people discarding the fear of being abused by public.
Another major shameful act among rape cases in India is child raping. In 2013, 12363 child rape cases were filed and this is a 45% increase in comparison to 2012. In India, Madhya Pradesh stands first for the most number of child rape cases followed by Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh in second and third places, respectively.
Calls for more deadly punishment and strict measures were ringing, yet, this menace can not be stopped without the individuals themselves learning how to behave as humans. With some sections of the media claiming women are equally responsible for the incident, each respective individual should stay within his/her limits to avoid this menace.
When can our proud country come out of this problem? Will the government be able to curb this if not completely eradicate the issue? Let us hope for the best appropriate action from all of us.
