Indigenously manufactured Prithvi-II missile was successfully test-fired on Thursday in the Integrated Test Range (ITR) at Chandipur, Odisha.
An important point to be noted is that the missile is nuclear capable and has a strike range of 350 km. It can carry a load of 500-1000 kg of warheads and takes thrust from liquid propulsion twin engines.
"The trial of the missile conducted by the Strategic Force Command (SFC) was fully successful," ITR director MVKV Prasad told PTI over phone.
"The missile was randomly chosen from the production stock and the entire launch activities were carried out by the specially formed SFC and monitored by the scientists of Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) as part of training exercise," a defence scientist said.
The Hindustan Times also reports that the trajectory and impact point of the missile, launched in and around 9.20 a.m local time, was monitored closely.
"The missile trajectory was tracked by DRDO radars, electro-optical tracking systems and telemetry stations located along the coast of Odisha.
"The downrange teams on board the ship deployed near the designated impact point in the Bay of Bengal monitored the terminal events and splashdown," sources said.
Last such trial conducted on November 14,2014 at the same center was also successful. Prithvi-II was incidentally the first development under India's Integrated Guided Missile Development Program (IGMDP)
