Indian government has decided to end the 135 years service of money ordering due to the less usage of the service.
Since 1880, the money order service is in use in over one lakh and 55 thousand post offices all over India. In 2008, electronic money order service was launched which is faster and easier than the old challan filing system. Hence, the use of postal money order was not very required and rarely used.
Fast spreading online banking systems and mobile transfers only add to the factors that contribute to the death of money orders.
Notably, in 2013, telegram service was stopped due to the increased use of electronic services like SMS, E-mail and others. Now, within two years, India Post announces that the traditional money order service would no longer be available.
