Mary Kom |
India's most successful boxer - Mary Kom's intentions to hang up her boots on a high at the Rio Olympics faces a serious threat from Boxing India (BI).
The Tribune has reported that the five-time world champion has not turned up for any of the BI camps organised after the Asian Games 2014 and the BI has even lodged a protest against the same to Manipur boxing association. If the trend continues, the boxer's career might come to an abrupt end.
The report further states that the boxer should attend the ongoing national camp at the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium in New Delhi to be eligible for a place in Rio Olympics.
“Every boxer is the same for BI. Mary Kom, being the senior-most, had been given special treatment in the past and was even allowed to skip the National Championship. But in this case, since there has not been any communication from her side, BI decided to exclude her name from the camp,” Jay Kawli, BI’s secretary was quoted as saying.
The organisation has made it clear that unless or otherwise the boxer turns up for the camps it would be hard to select her ahead of her competitors. Also the fact to be noted is that Pinky Jangra has been pushing for a place in Mary Kom's category and has even defeated the veteran in Glascow Commenwealth Games trials.
