8 lions were killed by the massive floods affecting Gujarat, confirmed the state forest department. The worse is that more than 40 big cats were missing from the Amreli district Gir area, the Tribune reported.

A record 400 mm rainfall was reported in the Krakach range of the Gir in Amreli, that is estimated to have killed around 8000 wild animals overall. The carcasses of 8 lions, including 4 females and a female cub were found on the banks of the Shetrunji river in Bhavnagar district.

The officials have sent out seven teams to locate missing lions which successfully rescued one lioness from a temple in Ingorala village.

A massive destruction of the lion species and wildlife is a worrying sign. 150 giant blue bill carcasses were also recovered along with 1,000 other dead animals, the report adds. An assistance of ₹ 21 Crore has been announced by the state government for the Saurashtra region.
