For those who have been calling for a single national helpline for all emergencies, this announcement would be more welcoming. 112 (toll-free) will soon serve as the common emergency number for all sorts of needs nationwide.
The numbers 100, 101, 102 and 108 that are dealing emergencies at the moment will continue service, but will be redirected to 112. reports indicate.
All calls will reach the central control room in Delhi that will redirect them to appropriate call centers in cities. TRAI will be involved in tracking back the call location, helping to speed up the process. The plan is being funded by the Nirbhaya fund and will start by concentrating on women safety before gradually starting to deal with all sorts of emergencies.
112 is being used as the single emergency number in all countries of the European Union and India will soon offer the same.
They are also considering to place panic buttons in all public transport across the country but are contemplating on the drawbacks.
