Shoaib Malik - Sania Mirza |
Former Pakistan captain and husband of Indian Tennis star Sania Mirza said that his wife's ascent to the World No.1 ranking in women's doubles is also a matter of pride to Pakistan and himself.
Speaking on the back of Sania's achievement Malik said: "I am extremely proud and overwhelmed with joy. It's a matter of pride for Pakistan as she is my wife and, of course, she is from India and she represents her nation with 100 percent determination to be the best".
Further taking pride on Sania, the first Indian women to reach the pinnacle of women's tennis, the all-rounder said: "It's also a victory for all tennis players and tennis fans in India and Pakistan on what is possible with hard work at a global level.
"I loved tennis before I married Sania, but now my heart is really in it. I watch her matches, and also those of her rivals to keep up to date. Also since most of the time she is playing I'm not with her, I watch also because I miss her a lot," said Malik, who celebrated the Hyderabadi player's win with his family before calling on to congratulate his in-laws back in India.
Sania and her Swiss partner Martina Hingis also reached the 'numero uno' position as a pair during the course of their successful campaign in Charleston, their third successive win since teaming up.
