Madrid – A few years back only one club would have stuck your mind when you hear this word and that is Real Madrid. But that boat is not sailing alone now. We have a partner to further flourish the historic city, and they are none other than Atletico Madrid.
The club was founded 111 years ago and they have 10 La Liga crowns and 10 Spanish Cups but still they could not reach the heights of their rivals who have 10 Championships in Europe alone and I do not want to waste your further time by listing all the big history of Real Madrid. They are worth my words.
In their entire history, the teams have met head to head in the League fixtures in 156 games. In that, 33 were drawn and 85 of the games were won by Real Madrid. So the name and fame they had was not just an exclamatory. They earned it with everything and they owned the city for themselves.
We can read history, learn the statistics and even be proud of history, but you cannot live with it (i.e) you cannot survive only with the history.
Past is past and there is no guarantee to future so you must live in the present. So we better see the present rather than describing a very delightful history. Because a history cannot be delightful if the present is not.
Yes, the present is not delightful for Real Madrid. They have 4 losses and 2 draws against their city rivals in all competitions in their last six games. This hasn’t happened before, in 102 years.
The team Atletico Madrid is the current Spanish champions and is a strong competitor to retain their crown. Of course, Real Madrid is the top contender and are on the top of the league table this season. But what about their city - the Madrid? Without considering the whole history of a century, let’s take a small part in it; from year 2000 to present.
In a total of 36 games played in all competitions, Real emerged as winners on 22 occasions and 8 other were drawn. Atletico has won just 6 games against their greatest rivals. Again the statistics favor the Los Blancos. But Atletico Madrid owns the city right now.
Statistics and results can be a reminder, but they can’t be a decider. A series of poor performances could not collapse the very impressive and legendary history of Real Madrid. But it can surely help as a motivator to CREATE another. That is exactly what is happening now.
Atletico Madrid are creating their very own history in the recent years with a very good manager and a bunch of dedicated players. This can be a very good starting.
But can they continue? That is the very difficult one to answer and that is where clubs like Real Madrid take advantage. So the key is CONSISTENCY, not just consistency but a consistent VICTORY is required. They have to keep on winning to brush off their past image and they have to be aware that this spirit does not go to dust in the coming years. Because we are seeing clubs who produce excellent results for some period and soon return to where they were: TO THEIR PAST.
So in order to overshadow the mighty Real Madrid, Atletico must continue this superb work or else their recent performances would go to dusts before a club like Real Madrid. For now the city has two very good teams battling very hard to the crown. The number has risen from one to two. Let’s wish it will stay as this for a very long period to come.
