Chennai Metro Rail project deliberately delayed by Tamil Nadu government

Chennai Metro Rail

The phase-1 of Chennai Metro Rail project was initially scheduled to be up and running by October 2014 but was deliberately pushed back as the leading party await the release of their leader J.Jayalalitha in the disproportionate assets case.

IBN Live reports that the 10-kilometer rail stretch connecting Koyembedu with Alandur has seen trail runs over the last few months. Commissioner of Railway Safety is yet to give clearance to begin operations.

DMK spokesperson TKS Elangovan said, "The project should have been completed and the service should have started. I don't know why they are delaying it."

Interim Cheif Minister O.Pannerselvam is accused of showing less intent to bring in new acts and completing government projects as the party anxiously awaits the judgement day.

Frontline magazine editor R Vijaya Sankar said, "Policy paralysis is related to two things - the personality of the present chief minister - and his autonomy. We don't expect him to be independent and second thing is the political uncertainty- even files moving I don't think Panneerselvam can do it on his own."

For an instance, Tamil Nadu's Global Investors Meet 2015 was also pushed back to September from May.

The judgement is reserved for May 11 (Monday) and the result would significantly affect the law and order, one fears. The same was also reported to be the problem that made investors act more cautiously in completing the Metro Rail project on time, fearing uncertain political situation.
