It has been another amazing week of football. Anything can happen in football at anytime and this week has a lot to prove the uncertainty. And I’m glad to bring you the latest results from the top leagues.
English Premier League
The English league tops the favorites list for its more competitive nature both physically and technically. You ever can’t brand an English team as an underdog for any competition. If you do, then you will receive surprise as well as shock to your skeleton.
The highlight of the week is the clash between the top two contenders Chelsea and Manchester city and more from expectations, the match brought something new. You can bet that the game would have stopped every Chelsea fan's heart when they were denied a win by an equalizer from their own legend 'THE SUPER' FRANK LAMPARD.
There are plenty of shock results in Premier League this week, as Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspurs have been thumped by West Bromwich Albion and West Ham United respectively. Southampton managed to beat the second top team Swansea City even though they lost too many of their key men in the summer transfer. Another thunderbolt surprise came when the newly boosted Manchester United surrendered their two-goal lead twice to the newly promoted Leicester City and eventually lost the game by 5-3 at the end.
I owe an apology to Arsene Wenger. How can I leave it late to mention their comeback from the nightmare against Borussia Dortmund? The Gunners easily swiped aside Aston Villa to a comfortable 3-0 win with the highlight of the match being Mesut Ozil. The German found his feet with a goal and an assist to his name.
Chelsea remain toppers with 13 points from 5 games and have a comfortable 5 points lead from the second top Southampton. Aston Villa sit third but only behind by goal difference and with Arsenal at 4.
La Liga
No place for compromises or excuses in Spain. La Liga is the most sensational league since the world’s two best players are playing one against another with bitter rivals in the name of Real Madrid and Barcelona. It is quiet an expected week in Spain, but for the defending champions Atletico Madrid.
Real Madrid thrashed Real Deportivo with an 8-2 win and Barcelona demolished Levente with a 5-0 clean sweep. The Catalans are yet to concede a goal in all their competitive fixtures in the new season. Atletico Madrid earned a hard fought 2-2 draw against Celta Vigo.
Barcelona tops the table followed by Sevilla, Atletico Madrid and Granada.
Bundesliga
A very unusual week in Germany this time. Last season winners and favorites Bayern Munich were held to a goalless draw by Hamburger SV while the second favorites Borussia Dortmund lost 2-0 to Mainz. The other top teams namely Schalke, got a single point against Frankfurt, and Wolfsburg defeated Bayer Leverkusen in an entertaining game by 4-1. Borussia Monchengladbach earned a point from their visit to Koln.
Following a series of surprise results, Paderborn top the league table by goal difference with Mainz at the second top chased by Hoffenheim and Bayern Munich. Interestingly, all the top four teams have exactly the same points differed only by goal difference.
Ligue 1
The most competitive league right now, according to the current table. The top three teams differ only by goal difference orderly Marseille, Bordeux and Saint-Etienne. Lille sits at fourth with just one point ahead of Paris Saint-Germain, Montpellier, Nanes who are placed 5,6 & 7 respectively with all having 10 points to their name, again the deciding factor being goal difference.
If this trend continues throughout the season, then the French league might see a very close finish than the English.
Serie A
Toppers Roma eased past Cagiliari with a comfortable 2-0 win, whereas fellow contenders Fiorentina and Juventus earned narrow 1-0 victories. A good start to the new season by Milan with their new manager Inzaghi means they are comfortable placed at fourth. A big disappointment to Rafa Benitez this week as his Napoli suffered their second defeat in a row, causing some serious problems to the gaffer.
But seeing the teams’ performances it looks like the real battle is yet to start. The Italian league is mostly dependent on quality rather than quantity (money). But, this time the quality was less showcased till now and I hope it will rise up shortly.
This is all we have at the end of the week. Stay tuned for more action.
