Critically acclaimed as well as commercially successful Malayalam film Drishyam's Tamil version retains all the X factors that made the original a success. It is not every day you see Kamal Haasan in a remake and when he appears in one, more often that not he gives a commanding performance.

For a whole lot of reasons, the actor has been losing out on big box office openings in last few years and we are afraid this remake is not going to get him any, especially with the run time stretching to 3 hours and theme not so attractive to majority of the movie going age-group.

Storyline

A simple man in a village and his family encounters trouble in the form of a youngster with wrong intentions. When the family accidentally murders him, they decide to cover that up from police. It is easier said than done.

Cast & Crew

You can't really rate Kamal Haasan, only admire and you get to see him perform well again. Gautmi, back on the big screen after a long hiatus was good too. Nivetha Thomas shines as a daughter of Kamal, depicting the emotions appreciably well. Esther Anil as the younger child was equally good.

Two other strong show from Asha Sharath (Geetha Prabhakar) who replicated her role from Malayalam and Anant Mahadevan (Prabhakar) added much value to the overall output.

The screenplay was very similar to the original, almost identical, as director Jeethu Joseph was able to recreate the magic again. Ghibran's composition goes by the demand. Sujith Vaassudev, the one who took care of cinematography in the original was on back on board again and gives well-composed visuals.

On the hindsight, it gives a glimpse into the family situations when a youngster mishandles the long rope given by his/her own family. The second half of the film with all those investigation stuff and Kamal's wise mind strategies gives a relatively better movie experience over the first part.

You couldn't help yourself out of some yawning in the middle of the screenplay despite the script being very much impressive. Those who have watched the original mightn't be much impressed with the remake sans the Kamal Haasan show in the climax. And as always 'Ulaga Nayagan' steals the show. But the real winner is the script that could not be predicted if you haven't watched the original yet.

Bottomline

People who've watched Drishyam can give it a skip, for others, it demands a trip to the cinemas.
