Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir rule themselves out of Deodhar Trophy

Indian discards Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir have requested the North Zone selectors not to include them in their squad for Deodhar Trophy, reports NDTV.

Both Gambhir and Sehwag last played an ODI in January 2013 and has been going through a rough patch for a long time now across all formats in domestic competitions. It seems the opening pair is fully aware that they are way down the pecking order for a World Cup berth after hearing their decision.

As a result, the senior duo has decided to clear the road for the younger lot who deserve a place. However, they did put together a 144-run partnership in Delhi's hard fought win against Haryana in the Vijay Hazare Trophy fixture.

"Today, at the start of the selection committee meeting, the chairman Vikram Rathour intimated us that Viru (Virender Sehwag) has specifically told him that he doesn't want to play Deodhar Trophy. He has insisted that some of the promising juniors may be picked. Gauti (Gautam Gambhir) has also decided against playing but I have no clue about why he pulled out," a member of the North Zone selection committee told PTI on Tuesday.

Another Indian discard Harbhajan Singh is now appointed captain for the 50-over tournament that begins on November 29.

North Zone squad: Harbhajan Singh (Captain), Unmukt Chand, Manan Vohra, Mandeep Singh, Yuvraj Singh, Milind Kumar, Gurkeerat Singh Mann, Rishi Dhawan, Amit Mishra, Parveez Rasool, Mohit Sharma, Sandeep Sharma, Nakul verma (Wk), Taruwar Kohli, Vikas Tokas.
