Suffering a collision while rushing in to converge on a catch, the substitute fielder soon went unconscious at the Salt Lake stadium where East Bengal played Bhowanipore club.

Former Bengal spinner Shivsagar Singh gave mouth-to-mouth respiration helping him to regain consciousness. Batsman Anustup Majumdar also attended the injured.

"Fielding at sweeper cover, Keshri rushed to take the high catch as left-arm pacer Sourav Mondal too ran on his follow through. It was as freak an accident as possible," Bengal A coach Jaideep Mukherjee, who was present at the ground, told PTI.

Returning from the Kolkata airport, the official said: "I am not in a position to speak. I am feeling devastated and I don't know what his parents must be going through. His body will be brought to East Bengal tent before being taken for last rites.

"I am not in a mental frame of mind to attend any meeting," added the joint secretary.

"It's so unfortunate. He was such a promising cricketer and for him to pass away in such a manner is difficult to swallow," he also said.

"I did not want to get this news. A fine young talent who should have played Ranji Trophy in a year or two. I am told he suffered cardiac arrest in the morning," Manoj Tiwary, Bengal cricketer who will be taking the field for Delhi Daredevils tonight said.
