9th Annual Vijay Awards - 5 deserving contenders who didn't win the award

If there was an award function that has gathered a huge fan following and eyeballs over the last decade it was none other than the Vijay Awards. However, with every passing year, the event is losing shine and value with its scheduling and claims of being partial.

Not in any means debating the jury's choices, here we - being passionate filmgoers, suggest that some awards could have been given to more deserving names in our point of view.

1. Best Actor - Dinesh (Cuckoo)

Original winner - Dhanush (Velai Illa Pattadhaari)

With due credit to Dhanush for giving an apt projection of an unemployed engineer on screen, the award could have been given to Dinesh for his critically acclaimed portrayal of a blind. The actor's dedication was well visible and probably he deserved it more.

2. Best Actress - Swetha Nair (a) Shivada Nair (Nedunchalai)

Orignial winner - Amala Paul (Velai Illa Pattadhari)

Not many people would have tipped Amala Paul to win the top honor as it was not even a performance oriented role in Velai Illa Pattadhaari. On the other hand, Swetha Nair enacted the character of Manga to perfection in this film based on highway robberies.

Maalavika Nair who was recognized for her performance in Cuckoo as the Best Debut Actor (Female) could have been the other strong contender.

3. Best Cinematographer - George C. Williams (Kaththi)

Original winner - Gavemic U Ary (Jigarthanda)

After the impressive debut in Raja Rani, the lensman was drafted in to give vision to this A.R.Murugadoss movie and what a performance it was. There was a need to make an output that should be classy without conceding the mass element in certain scenes. He gave a fresh look to the stunts and the tunnel scene attracted masses. An award winning show without a doubt.

4. Best Lyricist - Pa.Vijay (Yaarumilla - Kaaviya Thalaivan)

Original winner - Kabilan (Aathangarai - Yaan)

The heroine's feel of wanting to be with the hero will be explained well in an imaginary situation. Plain, simple lines that convey the feel of romance well.

5. Best Background Score - M.Ghibran (Amara Kaaviyam)

Original winner - Santhosh Narayanan (Jigarthanda)

There won't be any extraordinary dialogues in this movie and not so brilliant acting from the lead pairs, yet, Ghibran's background score made one to feel the love in the script. Awesome handling of classical instruments, especially flute. Debatable this, but Ghibran is unlucky to miss out one can say.

Special Jury Award - Jeeva (Film)

Deserved more recognition for the way it was filmed in the first place. Second for the close to reality acting and for the director - depicting the life of an aspiring cricketer caught in the trap of the cunning cricket board's chairman. The movie was of high quality and everything worked in this movie to be honest.
