The number of farmers to have committed suicide in the Marathwada region of Maharashtra since January is a worrisome 322, as on May 17, 2015.
Lack of rain being the primary reason that in turn lead to poor crop returns, the farmers were also severely affected by debts and infertile lands. The region comes under the Aurangabad division of the state and the districts of Beed and Nanded suffer major loss. According to Dinakaran, 90 farmers ended their lives in Beed and 61 in Nanded, respectively.
The death toll stands at 53, 48 and 23 in Osmanabad, Aurangabad and Latur districts respectively. Parbhani and Jalna witnessed 18 and 15 such deaths.
As per sources, the state government has taken adequate measures to tackle the problem by providing subsidies and has also formed committees to survey the affected areas. Around 200 among the dead were eligible for the same.
