Top 4 candidates who could end Manchester United's curse

Written by Sundara Prabu

If anyone had told me that Manchester United will drop down from the ‘favorites’ grade to mid-table a year back, I would have laughed at them. But now, they all are laughing at me and that is not surprising either.

The 20 time Premier League winners are struggling to stand on their feet and are losing their pride day by day even though they have spent, no, no, no they’ve splashed cash against their history.

David Moyes was handpicked by the great ‘Sir Alex Ferguson’ to continue his legacy. But it all messed up, Moyes lost his job as a result and was criticized badly. Then the Dutchman Louis Van Gaal was brought to improve the proceedings and was allowed to buy anyone he wished for.

He did his best and signed a number of great talents in the names of Angel Di’Maria, Ander Herrara, Radamel Falcao, Luke Shaw, Daley Blind, and Marcos Rojo. But unfortunately the things are getting worse for the gaffer and United. The entire world is looking for an answer to the darkness and we bring you a list of top 4 players who could solve the problem and help MU to end the disastrous run.

First, let’s see what is wrong before we look for solutions.

What’s wrong?

Having one of the best attacking units with the likes of Wayne Rooney, Rabin Van Persie, Radamel Falcao, Angel Di’Maria and Juan Mata the results must be in the favor of the Old Trafford side. Because, this attack unit can tear off any defense on Earth and that is not an exclamation. They are deadly. Then what is wrong with them and why the results are going worse? It’s definitely because of their weird defense unit which doesn’t have a proper defensive mid.

The newly bought Herrara is a true talent, but he is not the exact solution needed in the mid field to do the nasty works. Especially for strong tackling or when you are leading and you want to pull the strings to slow down the game, you really need a strong man not a skillful playmaker. When the opponents are fierce and are countering with pace and accuracy you must need a guy who is strong enough to hold the speed, protecting your center-backs. Herrara is not that kind of guy. He can pass well, he can create, he can distribute, but he can’t master the midfield and dictate the entire play which was previously done by Paul Scholes. This is the reason why LVG wanted Arturo Vidal.

Since Vidal has decided to stay at Juventus and hasn't looked like moving in near future, let’s now go for the other solutions!

1. Kevin Strootman

The Dutch man is the primary target for Luis Van Gaal this summer and he almost signed the player, but for a serious injury the player suffered. A potential move ended owing to that and he was still not sidelined because of the same. Still, he is expected at the 'Theatre of Dreams' in the coming January.

The ‘DUTCH ROY KEANE’ is well known for his uncompromising play. The midfielder is very good at tackling, precisely ‘strong’ tackling. He possesses great vision and he can offer the stability and solidity that MU is crying for.

2. Nigel de Jong

The Netherlands international is a specialist in nasty works and famous for his powerful tackles. The way he reads the play, he intercepts, he defends and his box to box efficiency is simply terrific.

The 29 year old rejected his compatriot’s offer and favored a stay at San Siro recently. But, LVG could have lured him if he retreated from the pursuit of Arturo Vidal, the chase he lost.

3. Fredy Guarin

The versatile Columbian midfielder currently playing for Inter Milan is a great talent in the centre and has a gift of popping up the net from long ranges with both feet part from being very good in performing aerial attacks.

The former FC Porto and St Etienne star can fill in the boots of the legendary Micheal Carrick as he possess the aerial passing qualities of the former.

4. Sami Khedira

I hope no introductions were needed for this German veteran. The midfielder had a wonderful world cup with Germany, but he cannot satisfy the expectations at the Spanish capital any longer. Moreover, he is at the last year of his contract.

The midfielder is eager for a move away and is one of the best holding talents in the world. The strength and vision of the player can exactly serve the purposes LVG is asking for.
